The Grand Canyon State’s Rise to No. 8
Arizona boasts a winning combination of scenic landscapes, a lower cost of living, less crowded cities, and a sun-soaked lifestyle that’s attracting people from all walks of life. The U-Haul Growth Index, analyzing one-way customer moves in 2023, reveals that Queen Creek, Surprise, and Tucson are leading the charge in Arizona’s growth. While among the notable net-gain markets in Arizona are Scottsdale, Goodyear, Bullhead City, Prescott, Marana, Peoria, Avondale, Kingman, Lake Havasu City, Pinetop-Lakeside, Litchfield Park, and Anthem. These cities contribute to Arizona’s consistent ranking as a top-growth state for the fourth consecutive year.
U-Haul’s Impact on Arizona’s Growth
The data shows that one-way U-Haul customers arriving in Arizona accounted for 50.3% of all one-way U-Haul traffic, solidifying the state’s status as a top growth destination. While the overall moving traffic slowed slightly, Arizona remains a hotspot for those opting for the do-it-yourself moving approach.
Surprise and Queen Creek in the Spotlight
Among the top growth cities of 2023, Surprise holds the No. 18 spot, witnessing a rise in one-way U-Haul customers. Jesse Ashdown attributes Surprise’s appeal to its affordability, family-friendly environment, and proximity to Phoenix.
Queen Creek makes a notable debut as the No. 23 U.S. growth city of 2023. Sandra Gutierrez, President of U-Haul Company of East Valley, highlights Queen Creek’s rapid growth, stunning views of the San Tan Mountains, and the value it offers to residents seeking a family-focused community. The East Valley has been a hotspot for growth for the last few years, as a suburb of Phoenix, offering residents the perfect blend of a desert home with low property taxes and affordable housing options. In fact, findings from the most recent citizen survey in Queen Creek reveal a high level of satisfaction among residents with a significant 93% of respondents expressed that Queen Creek is either a good or excellent place to live, while 90% gave an excellent or good rating to the overall quality of life. The town consistently conducts these citizen surveys every 18 or 24 months as part of an effort to assess the opinions of residents regarding the community.
